Site Management
Who runs the allotments?
The allotments are self-managed by the plotholders. Everyone is expected to pitch in with the site’s upkeep in some way, even if it’s just a small contribution.
How can I help out?
There are Work Parties throughout the year (dates to be confirmed) where we do things like clear paths, repair boundaries, plant hedges, and tidy plots. It’s a great way to meet people and usually ends with a friendly lunch.
What about the Trading Hut?
The Trading Hut is open Saturdays & Sundays, 10:00–12:00 in Spring and Summer. We sell compost, manure, canes, plant food, and other essentials. You can pay by card, and in winter we’re trialing a “click-and-collect” system—email your order to arrange pickup. Volunteers are always welcome to help out.
How is the Committee elected and contacted?
Committee members—Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Rent Officer—are elected at the AGM in March. For any queries, email info@whetstoneallotments.co.uk.
What’s the Community Plot about?
The award-winning Community Plot is used by groups on Tuesdays (general maintenance & skills) and Thursdays (Mencap). Volunteers are welcome to help, water in summer, or join one-off projects. Community Plot

Standards & Inspections
What are the cultivation standards?
By late spring, at least 50% of your plot should be under cultivation or clearly prepared for growing. New plot holders should aim for 30% in year one, and up to 50% in year two. Ponds and areas for storage or entertaining don’t count.
Are there other standards?
Yes! Health & safety, structures, and paths:
- Plots should be safe—no broken glass or dangerous materials.
- Structures: only sheds, greenhouses, polytunnels, fruit cages, and compost heaps (approval required). No decks, pergolas, or treehouses.
- Paths: at least 50cm wide, safe and clear. Older plots without paths are exempt.
When are plots inspected?
Inspections happen in early spring and late summer/fall, judged against the standards above.

Using Your Allotment
What do I need to do on my plot?
Keep it cultivated, weeded, and safe. Mulching, composting, and small raised beds are recommended.
What can I grow?
Mainly vegetables, herbs, fruit bushes, and dwarf fruit trees (max 3m, 1m from boundaries). Flowers and small ponds are fine. Hedges and fences aren’t allowed; beans on canes can provide privacy.
Can I keep bees or livestock?
No. We already have three beekeepers, and the site can’t support any livestock.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, but dogs must always be on a lead or in a secure run.

Security & Safety
What if I see someone I don’t know on site?
Ask politely who they are. They might be a plotholder or Committee member. If in doubt, email info@whetstoneallotments.co.uk.
What if there’s theft or vandalism?
Call 111 (non-emergency) or 999 (emergency) first, then inform the Committee at info@whetstoneallotments.co.uk.
Why should I lock the gate?
To help prevent theft, vandalism, and fly-tipping and to ensure parking on site is limited to members. Always lock it when arriving and leaving.

Plot Changes & Relinquishing
Can I pass my plot to a friend or relative?
No. If you need to relinquish your plot, it goes back to the Committee and will be relet from the waiting list.
I’m giving up my plot—what do I need to do?
Email the Rent Officer via info@whetstoneallotments.co.uk to arrange key return and check your plot is tidy. You can sell your own tools or shed privately, but not via the Committee.
Can I appeal if asked to give up my plot?
Yes. Email info@whetstoneallotments.co.uk with your reasons. You may be asked to attend a Committee meeting.
